Parametric study of an X-ray FEL
نویسنده
چکیده
An FEL utilizing a high energy, high current and low emittance beam to prtduce radiation shorter than 2 A is investigated in this paper. This device is an extension of the previously proposed 40 A Linac Coherent Light Source based on the Stanford linear accelerator. Here we investigate the performance characteristics and parameter sensitivities of this single pass, high gain FEL amplifier operating by self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE). We begin by comparing various approaches to this short wavelength source and justify our choice of a helical undulator operating on the fundamental frequency. Numerical simulations as well as extensions of previous studies are used to show performance as a function of undulator parameters, startup noise, emittance, focusing, current and energy spread. Further studies and parameter modifications are proposed where needed.

Optical klystron FEL scheme for x-ray coherent harmonic generation at ISLF storage ring
The possibility of inserting an optical klystron on the storage ring of an Iranian Light Source Facility as a Synchrotron Radiation Free electron Laser for coherence harmonic generation in the soft x-ray spectrum has been studied. The study has been performed using the 3D FEL simulation code GENESIS 1.3 and in accordance with the available characteristic parameters of ISLF. Different potential ...
متن کاملTwo-color FEL amplifier for femtosecond-resolution pump-probe experiments with GW-scale X-ray and optical pulses
Pump-probe experiments combining pulses from a X-ray FEL and an optical femtosecond laser are very attractive for sub-picosecond time-resolved studies. Since the synchronization between the two independent light sources to an accuracy of 100 fs is not yet solved, it is proposed to derive both femtosecond radiation pulses from the same electron bunch but from two insertion devices. This eliminat...
متن کاملDevelopment of a Femtosecond Soft X-ray SASE FEL at DESY
In this paper we describe the extension of the soft X-ray SASE FEL at the TESLA Test Facility (TTF) at DESY for generation of femtosecond pulses. The idea is based on a technique of \manipulating" the energy spread along the electron bunch. Since the radiation ampli cation process is extremely sensitive to the value of the energy spread, only that part of the electron bunch radiates which has l...
متن کاملFEL Simulations for the LCLS
A first Design Study Report has recently been completed [1] for the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), a proposal to build an x-ray Free Electron Laser (FEL) at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) as a single pass SASE (SelfAmplified Spontaneous Emission) amplifier. The proposal includes the use of a very low emittance electron beam accelerated up to 15 GeV by the last third of the S...
متن کامل2 2 M ay 2 00 2 Scheme for Attophysics Experiments at a X - ray SASE FEL
We propose a concept for production of high power coherent attosecond pulses in X-ray range. An approach is based on generation of 8th harmonic of radiation in a multistage HGHG FEL (high gain high harmonic free electron laser) configuration starting from shot noise. Single-spike phenomena occurs when electron bunch is passed through the sequence of four relatively short undulators. The first s...
متن کاملThe Quantum X-ray Compton Free Electron Laser
The quantum operation mode in the X-ray Compton free-electron laser (FEL) is presented. This FEL mode emerges when the quantum emission exceeds the electron beam energy spread and FEL homogeneous linewidth, determined by the optical undulator length. Such a FEL becomes a two-level quantum oscillator with a completely inverted active medium. In the nonlinear interaction regime, inversion can be ...
